HR Slogan Conveys the Greater Impact of Team Work

together to capture the spirit of team work in
their winning slogan.

To Jim Covington, teamwork is not only about working together but also about a shared goal of serving the customer.

“I’ve always worked for organizations with a strong customer focus,” says Covington, manager of compensation and benefits. “If you look at the bottom line here at WCMC-Q, our customers and our products are the students and their education, respectively.”

The Shared Values competition—based on seven professional concepts that encourage best personal and group performance in an organization—has been running at WCMC-Q for the past year. Each phase is based on a value, the latest being teamwork. Through a team effort with his department, Covington came up with the winning slogan “Our Teamwork Makes Their Dream Work,” referring to how faculty and staff work toward a shared goal of student achievement.

“We all enjoyed working on this topic in a team meeting,” says Amanda Brailsford-Urbina, director of human resources. “The energy and enthusiasm was infectious, and after bouncing ideas around, this was the one that we all embraced immediately.”

Covington says that he always sees it as his job to take care of employees, and as his efforts fit into the bigger picture, he frees them to take care of the students. From a bigger perspective still, he explained how working together in a single department contributes to a national initiative.

“We work together as a team, but what’s the product? Why?” he says. “When you think about what it is in Education City and WCMC-Q, it’s a dream that will affect the life in this region and, because of its importance, the global dynamic. I think it’s really neat to be a part of that dream.”
