Productivity Apparent at First Annual Research Retreat

November 2010

The focus was on research Saturday as Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar held its first annual internal Research Retreat, a day-long, off-campus event at the Diplomatic Club in Doha.

More than a dozen faculty members and post-doctoral fellows provided a brief glimpse of their research during short oral presentations throughout the day. The event also included posters by more than 40 students, which highlighted their participation in summer research programs under faculty supervision at Cornell campuses in Ithaca, Manhattan or Doha.

“I really believe what we are doing here is historical,” says Khaled Machaca, Ph.D., associate dean for research. “This is practically the first program at this level of production and science in the region. ”

The biomedical research program, which was established two years ago, has 58 published papers to its credit in important international journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Cell Biology.

“Publication of papers is the first phase of productivity. We are looking forward to the next phase, which will be patents, and then, to the commercialization of our science,” says Dr. Machaca. “Our productivity is based on two things, the quality of our principal investigators and post-doctoral fellows and the strong support from Qatar Foundation.”
