Interim Dean Dr. Javaid Sheikh with recipients of 2009 Senior
honors Convocation awards.
Gathered together on the day before graduation, the outstanding members of the Class of 2009 were recognized at the Seniors Honors Convocation Tuesday at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
Awards for academic excellence, for clinical excellence, for leadership, for research, for the qualities of a good physician and for outstanding community service were bestowed on students. Then, the students bestowed awards for excellence in teaching and humanism in medicine to several members of the faculty.
It was an evening to celebrate the shared success of the class and the faculty who helped make it possible with their instruction and guidance.
Before turning to the awards portion of the program, Dr. Javaid Sheikh, interim dean, took a few moments to acknowledge the accomplishments of the students and to congratulate their parents.
“These students are pioneers and they will take the pioneering spirit that bought them here as they take their place in the international community of physicians,” said Dr. Sheikh. They have been active participants in the revolution of science and education underway in Qatar and Middle East. They have excelled in learning the latest knowledge in science and the art form of how to approach a patient.
“The future looks very bright,” said Dr. Sheikh, as WCMC-Q has continued to build on the success of the education program while building a robust research program. “We have sequenced the date palm genome and we have the capability to sequence the Qatari genome,“ Dr. Sheikh said. “We continue to strengthen our collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation and with Sidra Medical and Research Center. Our plan for the future is being filled in and it looks quite bright and full.”
Then Dr. Marcellina Mian, associate dean for clinical curriculum, and Dr. Powers Peterson, acting associate dean for basic science curriculum, presented the awards to students.
Two members of the class, Amira El Sherif and Yasir Tarabichi, made several trips to the stage as they received six and five awards, respectively. Imran Farooq received several awards, including two for leadership.
Dr. Mohammed Khaleel Hohnsen was awarded the House Staff Teaching Award, which is given by students to the Hamad Hospital resident who best exemplified clinical excellence and dedication to teaching. Dr. Nithila Isaac, assistant professor of anatomy in surgery, and Dr. Nady Mohamed Nady, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, were called to the stage repeatedly to receive awards from the students recognizing their excellence in teaching.
