PR officer for the Medical Student Executive Council (MSEC), Anas Abou-Ismail gives a round-up of recent student activities:

The voice of WCMC-Q students is certainly reaching out to the wider world. Several were interviewed for a report on NBC Nightly News, broadcast February 20th. Journalist Preston Mendenhall focused on how the education offered by WCMC-Q and other institutions in Education City is bringing about change, and about the career goals of one of our first year pre-medical students. You can access the web-based report, "U.S. education takes root in Arab desert," at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6870667/ popup

Then there are the Doha Debates: Hosted by the BBC’s HARDTalk interviewer, Tim Sebastian, the Qatar Foundation’s Doha Debates have themselves become a talking point. The choice of hot topics attracts large audiences, including WCMC–Q students who regularly take part in the debate. February’s debate was televised on BBC World.

Around the Medical College:

ebruary saw the first meeting of the poetry club. There are about 10 poets and students interested in poetry, and three of them took part in the Coffee House last semester. The main goal of the club is to publish a WCMC–Q poetry book.

Meanwhile, the deaf & mute club organized a fund–raiser on the plaza outside the east entrance, with face painting, play station, a horror tent, and the amazing jumping castle among the activities. Music was by DJs Midhun and Mazin (WCMC–Q freshmen.) There were visitors from all over Education City and beyond. A group of applicants to the Medical College said that they couldn’t wait to join the WCMC–Q team, after watching the students set up something of this size.

Valentine’s Day surprise: On Monday, February 14th five freshmen girls who volunteered to be secret cupids brought roses and chocolate to students and staff. The amount of chocolate and the large number of roses that were sent on this special day came as quite a surprise.

Thursday afternoons are now devoted to sports, thanks to the organizing genius of Teaching Assistant (TA), Andrew Ma. On Thursday 17th, most of those taking part played soccer. There was a game of American football as well. I should note that the girls’ participation in the sports event was higher than expected, although the guys showed up in larger numbers. Other sports now well established at WCMC–Q include cricket, supported by enthusiasts among the faculty and director of student affairs, Charles Paragg.

Coming up:

There’s another Coffee House planned for Friday, March 4th. Preparations and rehearsals are underway, led by TA Erin King; if it meets the standards set by the first event last semester, it could be a blast.
