Press Release
Weill Cornell Medical College to Host Public Lecture by World-Famous Expert on Heart Disease

Antonio M. Gotto, Jr., M.D., D. Phil., Dean of WCMC-NY
Professor of Medicine and Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, Antonio M. Gotto, Jr., M.D., D. Phil., will deliver a public lecture on the subject of heart disease, at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar on Sunday May 9th, 2004.

The lecture is entitled: "Heart disease: what we know about preventing and treating heart attacks."

The lecture will take place at 11:00 a.m. in Lecture Hall 2 of the WCMC-Q building in Education City. Interested members of the public are welcome to attend.

Coronary heart disease is a serious health problem across the world. Yet it is also mostly preventable: taking action in some key areas, including eating healthy food, taking physical exercise and avoiding harmful activities such as smoking, can have a major beneficial effect.

Sunday‘s lecture, which will be in English, is designed to give members of the public information and guidance to understand more about this serious disease and what measures they may take to avoid - or cope with - some of its manifestations.
Dr. Gotto is an internationally renowned expert in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, with a wealth of experience in academic medicine, patient care and research.

Before moving to Weill Cornell in New York, where he is also Provost for Medical Affairs for Cornell University, Dr. Gotto spent more than twenty years at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Scientific Director of The DeBakey Heart Center.

Dr. Gotto‘s scholarly articles number well over 400. However, he has also played a significant role in educating the public about heart disease and preventive health measures. He is co-author of "The New Living Heart" and "The New Living Heart Diet" that explain the origin and dietary treatment of heart disease to the public, and he is the sole author of "The Living Heart Cookbook."

As Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, Dr. Gotto is a regular visitor to Weill Cornell in Qatar, the first branch of an American medical school ever to offer its M.D. program overseas. He has been instrumental in the development of the partnership between Cornell University and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, which led to the establishment of WCMC-Q in 2001.
