Pre-medical Program Opening Exercises 2004

The theme of medicine as both an art and a science ran through this year's Opening Exercises for pre-medical students, in speeches by Dean of WCMC-Q, Daniel R. Alonso, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Education, Elizabeth Alger, M.D., F.A.C.P. and Associate Dean for Pre-medical Education, David Robertshaw, Ph.D.

In the main ceremony of the event, held on September 1st, the 48 members of the Class of 2010 were congratulated on their formal entry into the Pre-medical Program by faculty, from whom they received Pre-medical Program pins and tote bags containing lab equipment.

Speaking to the assembled guests, faculty, students and parents, Dr. Alonso noted that the study of science has been fundamental to the teaching of medicine at Cornell University's Medical College - of which WCMC-Q is a branch - since its foundation. As early as the opening ceremonies in 1898, the then President of the University, Jacob Gould Schurman, had emphasized the importance of science in the training of doctors.

Dr. Robertshaw traced the development of the scientific method in medicine, from the time of Hippocrates to the present day. He observed that the present time is particularly exciting in the field of biological sciences, and he reflected on the major challenges ahead: combating diseases such as diabetes, and processes such as ageing.

In her Opening Exercise Address, Dr. Alger referred to "the rights, privileges and honors" conferred on a graduate when the Doctor of Medicine degree is awarded. Dr. Alger noted that the word "doctor" means teacher, and, taking the Hippocratic Oath as a guide, she spoke of the privilege of teaching students to be the doctors of the future, and working in the "family" of medicine.

Dr. Alger went on to examine the art of developing the skills of observation, communication and teamwork vital to clinical practice, while paying tribute to the achievements of colleagues working in scientific research.

Welcoming the Class of 2010 to WCMC-Q, Dr. Alger said: "we are here with an open hand and the offer of an opportunity."
