Professor Handrean Soran is Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust & Honorary Professor of Clinical Medicine Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, University of Manchester.

He subspecializes in lipidology, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular risk, parathyroid, calcium and bone metabolism. He provides a tertiary centre service for lipoprotein disorders, as well as calcium and metabolic bone diseases. His research work is mainly focused on cardiovascular risk, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) quality, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) functionality, micro- and macro-vascular complications of dyslipidaemia, diabetes & obesity and the effect of metabolic surgery induced weight loss as well as pharmacological agents on these complications.

Professor Soran is on the editorial board of Atherosclerosis Journal. He authored more than 185 peer reviewed publications including papers in high impact factor journal like New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinologist, BMJ, JCEM, Circulation, JACC, Diabetes Care, Atheroscleris. He also authored a number of book chapters.

Professor Handrean Soran successfully supervised 10 PhD and MD students and currently supervising 4 PhD students. He supervised tens of clinical trainees in Endocrinology and Diabetes, North West Deanery. He also successfully supervised 6 advanced nurse practitioners and nurse prescriber students. He leads the national endocrinology and diabetes specialty certificate exam course in Manchester since 2010 (http://endodiablipid.com/), that attracts delegates across UK and internationally.

Professor Soran leads cardiovascular trials team at Manchester University NHS Trust and Lipoprotein Research Group at University of Manchester. He acted as the UK chief investigator for more than 20 multicentre clinical trials and principal investigator for more than 40 multicentre clinical trials and studies. He currently leads a number of academic research projects. He also acted as a member of the steering committee of large multinational randomised control trials.

Professor Handrean Soran is the Chair of HEART UK’s medical, scientific and research committee, co-chair of the National Familial Hypercholesterolemia task force in UK and a member of UK lipoprotein apheresis committee, the national familial hypercholesterolemia clinical service oversight committee and the UK representative in the International lipid club and therapeutic apheresis expert group. He also served as the North West Deanery’s education lead for Endocrinology and Diabetes 2008 - 2018 and as the President of the Lipid and Vascular Section of the Royal Society of Medicine 2016 - 2018 and remains a member of the section’s council.
