WCM-Q welcomes the future of Qatari research

Six new Qatari graduates have joined WCM-Q’s Biomedical Research Training Program for Nationals where they will learn the skills required to pursue a successful career in research.

The six-month training program runs from January to June each year and provides comprehensive instruction and work experience to recent Qatari graduates in WCM-Q’s state-of-the-art laboratories. Working with the college’s world-class research scientists, the interns learn a wide variety of competencies including practical lab skills, how to undertake clinical research and research administration.

This year’s interns are Alreem Alhayder, a sociology and mass communication major from Qatar University; Amal Ibrahim, Fatima Al-Dasim, and Shaikha AlAbduljabbar who graduated in biomedical sciences from Qatar University; Kholoud Al-Najdi, a chemical engineering graduate from Texas A&M at Qatar; and Wadha AlMarri who majored in biological sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

Not only does the Biomedical Research Training Program for Nationals offer a solid grounding in the basic skills required to work in the research field, it also gives the interns the opportunity to contribute to real research projects being conducted at WCM-Q.

Dr. Khaled Machaca, associate dean for research at WCM-Q, said: “The Biomedical Research Training Program for Nationals has been a very successful initiative, launching many new graduates into a career in research. These new interns will learn and develop the skills and experience required for a fulfilling and rewarding career.

“On a national scale, they will contribute to overall research capacity and contribute to the growing number of Qatari researchers who will help the nation develop its knowledge economy and achieve the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.”

This is the seventh annual cycle of the Biomedical Research Training Program for Nationals, which was launched in 2011 and to date has helped 28 Qatari graduates take the first step on the path to a successful career in research.
