Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) has held an appreciation evening to acknowledge the outstanding contributions made by affiliated teaching faculty.

In their final two years of medical training, WCM-Q students complete clinical rotations under the guidance of physicians and other healthcare professionals at WCM-Q’s affiliated institutions, which comprise Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medicine, the Primary Health Care Corporation, Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, and the Feto Maternal Medical Centre. Many affiliated faculty also teach in foundational sciences courses at WCM-Q.

Dr. Thurayya Arayssi said WCM-Q's affiliated teaching faculty are crucial to the college's mission.

The instruction and mentorship provided by these affiliated teaching faculty not only equips students with the core practical skills they need to be world-class physicians, but also helps them develop their professional identities and appreciate the ethical and moral responsibilities of the role. To acknowledge the contributions made by the more than 500 affiliated teaching faculty, WCM-Q invited them to a reception dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Doha. The event also featured a live performance of traditional Arabic music by the band Marasi.

Giving a speech of thanks, third-year medical student Fawzi Zghyer said: “Perhaps even more important than the knowledge you teach us are the traits we have picked up from you - how to treat team members, how to be respectful, how to make an anxious family member more at ease, and most importantly, how to put a smile on a patient’s face. Thank you for your guidance; may you continue to inspire others to achieve the greatness that you have.”

Affiliated teaching faculty member Dr. Omar Ahmed of Hamad Heart Hospital said: “The students are a pleasure to teach. They are very keen to learn and they do their best to pick up what we are teaching them and to develop their skills. I really value working with students – it is not only very rewarding but also keeps my own knowledge fresh and up-to-date.”

Speeches of thanks were also given Dr. Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, and Dr. Thurayya Arayssi, senior associate dean for medical education and continuing professional development.

Dr. Arayssi said: “The hard work that our dedicated affiliated faculty devote to our students is absolutely crucial to the mission of WCM-Q. Without your efforts we would simply not be able to produce world-class physicians that we do. We are truly grateful for your contributions.”
