Expert cardiologists from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) ran a training workshop to pass on the key skills required to use electrocardiogram (ECG) tests effectively in the clinic.

The one-day workshop, led by Dr. Mohamed B. Elshazly, cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at WCM-Q and Dr. Alessandro Salustri, senior consultant and director of noninvasive cardiology at HMC Heart Hospital, was held at WCM-Q and used lectures, cases presentations and small group discussions to explain the fundamentals of ECG use.

Participants learned how to identify ECG changes, how to interpret ECG changes related to ventricular and atrial heart arrhythmias, and how to critically identify and evaluate ECG changes related to coronary heart disease. The workshop also addressed working in multidisciplinary teams consisting of cardiologists, nurses and ECG technicians.

In addition to Dr. Elshazly and Dr. Salustri, the workshop featured speakers from seven other HMC Heart Hospital professionals: Dr. Shahul Hameed Ahammed Khan Dr. Sajad Hayat, Dr. Nidal Ahmad Asaad, Dr. Fahmi Othman, Dr. Nora Al Jefairi, Ms. Safia Bibi Sayyed Gul Karim and Ms. Samira Nasrallah.

Dr. Elshazly said: “Having a good working understanding of ECGs and how they are used in clinical practice to identify various heart conditions is an extremely useful skill for medical professionals to have. I am very grateful to the participants for attending and showing great dedication to learning these useful skills, and to our colleagues at HMC Heart Hospital for giving us the benefit of their expertise.”

The workshop, titled ECG in Clinical Practice, was accredited locally by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners-Accreditation Department (QCHP-AD) and internationally by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
