Khayr Qatarna, an initiative by Your Health First – Sahtak Awalan that teaches secondary school students about food security, agriculture and commerce, has been showcased at Agriteq, the region’s leading agricultural innovations exhibition.

Under the Khayr Qatarna initiative, which launched in 2018, large-scale climate-controlled greenhouses have been installed at ten secondary schools across Qatar allowing students to learn how to plant, raise and harvest a wide range of crops including strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, colored peppers, red cabbage and green beans.

His Excellency Mr Abdulla bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Municipality and Environment, with Nesreen Al-Refai, chief communications officer at WCM-Q.

All the crops have been granted the status of ‘Premium Products’ – an indication of their freshness and quality – by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

The produce is sold to the community at local supermarkets, with all proceeds reinvested to expand Khayr Qatarna.

The initiative is teaching students valuable lessons about healthy eating, agriculture, environmental awareness, and sustainability issues. Students are also learning about key business operations, such as logistics, commerce and economics. Additionally, Khary Qatarna is making a positive contribution to Qatar’s food security.

To share the success of Khayr Qatarna with the public, Your Health First – Sahtak Awalan brought a booth to Agriteq. Visitors to the exhibition were able to speak to Your Health First campaign staff to learn more about the initiative, sample produce grown in Khayr Qatarna greenhouses and discover the importance of food security and sustainability.

Your Health First – Sahtak Awalan is the flagship public health campaign of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q).

Nesreen Al-Rifai, Chief Communications Officer at WCM-Q, said: “Khayr Qatarna is a groundbreaking, innovative project bringing knowledge and skills relating to agricultural science, economics and food security directly to secondary school students, who have responded with tremendous enthusiasm. We are very proud to exhibit this initiative at Agriteq, which has a great reputation for embracing innovation in agricultural science that reflects our own forward-thinking approach.”
