Kim Leighton is a Registered Nurse trained in the US, whose clinical background is predominately emergency nursing. She began facilitating learning with mannequin-based simulation in 2003 in undergraduate and graduate multi-disciplinary education as well as for practicing clinicians in both the public and private sectors. Dr. Leighton is respected as an educator, researcher, and mentor in the field of healthcare simulation. While president of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning, she spearheaded development of the Standards of Best Practice: SimulationSM, endorsed by 20 interprofessional organizations and now in its third edition. This led to widespread dissemination of best practices to an interprofessional worldwide audience. 
 
Dr. Leighton’s research focuses on development and psychometric analysis of evaluation tools for simulation education, including the only comprehensive instrument to evaluate simulation facilitators, a unique survey designed to help leaders determine readiness to support simulation integration efforts, among others. Dr Leighton is co-editor of the award-winning book Simulation Champions: Fostering Courage, Caring, and Connection and an assistant editor for Clinical Simulation in Nursing.
