Introduction to Anesthesiology

The goal of the anesthesia course is to introduce students to the wide spectrum of anesthesiology. This includes patient management in the operating room, the ICU setting and pain control. The course emphasis is on the clinical application and interaction of pharmacology and physiology.

At the end of this course, the students should have a theoretical and practical understanding of the following topics:

Resuscitation including:

• Airway management
• Fluid management
• Cardiovascular management
• Preoperative assessment/postoperative management
• Sedation and pain management
• Anesthesia – regional and general
• OB, pediatric and geriatric patients

The anesthesia clerkship is taught over a one week period during the students’ transition from their second year curriculum to their third year clinical rotations. There is a one day orientation to operating room etiquette. This is followed by a series of lectures focused on the clinical approach and physiologic management of patients. This includes: achieving anesthesia for surgery, maintaining hemodynamic stability, acquiring an understanding of resuscitation, and controlling patients’ various pain states. This course should provide a basic fund of knowledge for the students’ future medical and surgical pursuits.
