Description

This 2-4 week elective will offer the student the opportunity to function in a fashion similar to an intern on the General Pediatric services. The student will be assigned to the general pediatric inpatient team, which consists of interns and residents. Students will be assigned patients and will be expected to i) work-up their patients on admission, including history taking, physical examination, identification of active clinical problems, development of a clinical diagnosis, selecting laboratory and imaging studies, development of a clinical plan, note and order writing, ii) present their patients at rounds and iii) attend all house staff conferences and rounds with the interns, iii) sign off his/her patients to the on-call team, iv) attend a general pediatric clinic once a week. The overall responsibility for the student's supervision will lie with the Floor Attending, the Clerkship Sponsor, the Chief Resident and the assigned resident team. The goal of this elective is to provide the student with an in-depth, supervised experience in pediatric medicine. The abilities of organization, clinical problem solving and basic therapeutics will be emphasized. Students will be evaluated on the following: 1) Professional characteristics (appropriate attire, demeanor on rounds, with colleagues, with parents), and 2) Clinical skills (fund of knowledge appropriate to level of training, history taking, physical examination, identification of active clinical problems, use of the laboratory and imaging services, development of a clinical plan, note and orders writing, organized presentations and delivery of anticipatory guidance).
