Description

The purpose of this elective is to introduce the student to disease of the reproductive endocrine system, its diagnosis and management by combining selected clinical experience and material with an introduction to relevant research in one aspect of endocrinology. Students may spend part of their time on the clinical service, and part of their time in the laboratory, or in both settings. The clinical orientation will involve direct patient evaluation and care, working directly with the consultants, specialists and the residents of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Hamad Women’s Hospital. The students are introduced to disruptions in physiology and anatomy that can lead to endocrinologic and infertility disorders. Common problems seen in REI practice include female and male infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, polycystic ovarian syndrome, anovulation, amenorrhea, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding and uterine leiomyomas. Exposure to Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART) includes observation of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, and andrology and embryology laboratory procedures. Evaluation will be based on overall clinical performance and an evidence-based presentation on an REI topic of interest. It is anticipated that during the 2 weeks elective students will be assigned to clinics with a consultant for the 1st week. During the 2nd week, they will be assigned 3 days in laboratory and 2 days in theatre.
