Introduction:

Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreters training (BTG) is designed by Cross Cultural Healthcare Program (CCHCP) since 1995 at the request and with the funding of US Public Health Services to improve access for the ethnic community to quality healthcare. In the recent years, medical Interpretation services have become a mandatory requirement for many accreditation body of health care institution. To meet the need of Qatar's high-diversified population and to conform to the accreditation standards, WCM-Q has obtained the license of CCHCP to provide BTG professional training for medical interpreters.

BTG training focuses on issues related to language and cultural barriers, implementation of code of ethics and effective communication skills. Students will actively participate in discussions about providing culturally and linguistically quality health care. They will have a chance to practice their interpersonal skills and assess their communication style.

Course Objective:

The main objective of BTG is to train bilingual individuals to facilitate understanding in communication between people who are speaking different languages. BTG curriculum is written with the guiding philosophy that patient-provider relationship is of the utmost importance in a health care encounter.

    At the end of this training, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify barriers to effective communication and describe the interpreter’s different roles in overcoming these barriers.
  2. Develop concrete techniques to respond effectively to interpretational, cultural and advocacy issues.
  3. Empower the patient he/ she serves and understand patient’s autonomy.
  4. Learn to be proactive about the community he/ she serves.
  5. Value the Medical Interpreter’s role in eliminating health disparities.

  4. Modes of interpreting
  5. Culture and its impact on interpreting
  6. Communication skills and appropriate advocacy
  7. Medical terminology for Medical Interpreters
  8. Professional development
    Evaluation tools:
  1. Pre test
  2. Final exam
  3. Daily quiz on the topic of the day
  4. Full attendance of the 40 hours
  5. Active participation in the class activities.
