Welcome to Molecules, Genes and Cells (MGC), the first course of your medical education at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.

The goal of MGC is to offer you an understanding of the basic scientific principles underlying the biochemical, molecular, cellular and genetic mechanisms that impart the normal structure and function of the human body and instruct its development. The basic disciplines covered, include biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, histology and neuroscience, thus laying down the scientific foundation of medicine.

The course has several learning modalities designed to maximize student participation. These include: problem-based learning (PBL), lectures, small group conferences (SGC), laboratories and journal clubs. Instruction will be delivered by on-site and WMC faculty. In addition, recorded lectures and live video lectures will be used during the course to maximize delivery of the material by content experts.

Reading assignments will be given from the following textbooks in addition to other sources chosen by the Lecturer:

Alberts, et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, 5th Edition
Ross, et al., Histology. A Text and Atlas, 5th Edition
Nelson and Cox, Lehninger’s Principles of Biochemistry, 5th Edition
Champe and Harvey, Biochemistry, Lippincotts Illustrated Reviews, 4th Edition
Jorde, Medical Genetics, 3rd Edition

A Histology Laboratory manual and addendum will be provided to you at the start of the course.

It is very useful for you to read the assignments in advance and it will greatly enhance your understanding of lectures, laboratories etc.

Assessment:

You will be responsible for the material presented in PBLs, lectures, small group sessions, journal clubs and laboratories. There will be bi-weekly quizzes on the material and also your performance will be assessed for the PBLs, the journal clubs, a histology practical exam and the final Triple Jump exam. A single grade of Honors, Pass or Fail will be given for the entire course based on these components, but proficiency will be required for each component for a passing grade.
