Description

This elective (2 or 4 weeks) is designed to introduce the student to the care of patients with cardiac and thoracic surgical diseases. The subinternship is specifically structured to provide an experience with graded levels of responsibility to all areas of cardiac and thoracic surgery, including adult and pediatric cardiac disease, as well as electrophysiology and non-cardiac thoracic surgical disease. The interested student will be involved in the pre-operative evaluation, including interpretation of cine angiograms, the intraoperative care, as well as all of the aspects of post-operative management of these critically ill patients. Facility with hemodynamic assessment, ventilator management, placement of invasive monitoring lines, interpretation of data, and cardiac support modalities will be stressed as the student is integrated into the team approach to patient care in a large and busy clinical service. The additional potential for clinical investigation, participation in conferences and lectures, as well as accommodating the individualized needs of the students are all possible as well. The elective may involve evening or night calls.
