Description

In this sub-I elective, students will function as an integral team member in the NICU. They will take responsibility for the care of NICU patients appropriate to their training level under the supervision of the NICU fellows and attendings. They will participate in a curriculum designed to enhance their knowledge and skills in the care of the critically ill neonate. Students will be encouraged to reflect on attitudes related to professionalism and humanistic practice in the NICU setting. Ethical issues related to the care of the critically ill neonate will also be discussed. Students will participate in interdisciplinary rounds with the obstetrical service. They will also be involved with social services and community follow up of NICU patients. Learning Objectives: i) perform exams in healthy newborn and critically ill neonate, ii) elicit histories from parents and communicate effectively with parents throughout the newborn's NICU stay, iii) interpret patient data including, history, physical exam findings, laboratory and radiology results, iv) list the differential diagnoses and potential complications for common problems of the newborn and critically ill neonate, v) describe management for common problems in the newborn and critically ill neonate, vi) describe issues related to ethics and culturally sensitive issues in the NICU setting, vii) participate, as appropriate, in deliveries and neonatal resuscitations under supervision of the NICU team, viii) demonstrate basic understanding and skills in neonatal resuscitation through the Neonatal Resuscitation Practicum (NRp) ix) observe and possibly participate, as appropriate, in common procedures in NICU e.g. lumber puncture, and ix) demonstrate understanding of the respiratory and nutritional support available in the NICU. Students will be evaluated on the following: 1) Professional characteristics (appropriate attire, demeanor on rounds, with colleagues, with parents), and 2) Clinical skills (fund of knowledge appropriate to level of training, history taking, physical examination, identification of active clinical problems, use of the laboratory and imaging services, development of a clinical plan, note and order writing, organized presentations).
