Description

The Clinical Pathology Elective is a four (4) weeks elective offered by the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Hamad Medical Corporation. The discipline of Clinical Pathology, for the most part, involves laboratory testing of body fluids such as blood and urine as compared to Anatomic pathology, which involves the examination of tissues. The elective is designed to introduce medical students to laboratory testing in various specialties of Clinical Pathology. Students will rotate through the four major disciplines in Clinical Pathology: Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology. Additional rotations can be arranged in Immunology, Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics. During these rotations, the students will have hands on laboratory experience in various sections and interact with members of the laboratory team, including laboratory directors, specialists, supervisors and technologists. Attendance and participation in departmental educational activities, clinico-pathologic rounds and conferences is encouraged and expected. At the end of the elective, the student should be familiar with the appropriate use and interpretation of laboratory tests, the consultation role of the clinical pathologist in patient care and the current state of the art technology and equipment used in laboratory testing. Prior approval of the sponsor and two months advance scheduling is required for this elective.
