Description

This elective, available as a 2 or 4 week course, will introduce the students to the Fundamentals of Clinical Informatics. It will explain the importance, development and history of Clinical Informatics and give students an understanding of Clinical Informatics as a discipline. Students will be taught workflow analysis and process redesign while they are guided through the different subdomains of Clinical Informatics. The course will discuss topics such as Clinical Information Systems (CIS), Clinical Decision Support, Care Process Improvement, Change Management and Organizational Behavior. Students will get the chance to learn about the Business of Healthcare Informatics and Innovation in Informatics. The course will also discuss the ethical and international perspectives of Clinical Informatics and explore the future of this subspecialty. Students will be introduced to the wide-ranging and rewarding career possibilities of Clinical Informatics. The ultimate goal of this course is to bring a more knowledgeable workforce to the digitized healthcare institutions of Qatar.

Instruction will be a combination of lecture and seminar format in which students will actively participate through discussion and presentation of topics. Students will receive hands on training at Cerner Live HMC facilities. Students on the 4 week elective will shadow a Senior CIS Staff Member and attend key organizational operational board meetings, including the CIS Programme Management Team (PMT), Design Change Authorization Board (DCAB) and Clinical Transformation Advisory Board (CTAB). Each student will be assigned a mentor from the Clinical Informatics Department for the duration of the elective.

Evaluation:
2 Week Elective – Summary Presentation
4 Week Elective – Organizational Action Project and Presentation.
