Description

A four (4) weeks rotation in Anatomic Pathology is offered. The majority of the time will be spent on the surgical pathology service where the student will be exposed to a large variety of diagnostic surgical and medical specimens including obstetrical/gynecological, gastrointestinal, breast, neuropathology, genitourinary, dermatologic, head and neck and hematopathologic cases among others. The student will work closely with residents and attending staff. Students will learn the role of the pathologist in patient care by observing procedures such as frozen sections, grossing of specimens and microscopic sign out. In addition to general surgical pathology, the student will be introduced to cytopathology. There are many multidisciplinary conferences in which the student can also participate. The elective can be customized to meet the career goals of the student. Upon completion of the elective, the student will have a good understanding of the practice of Anatomic Pathology and the role of the pathologist in the setting of a large medical center. The elective should be arranged with the prior approval of the sponsor and advance scheduling of at least two months prior.
