Dr. Uthman, who received his M.D. from the American University of Beirut, has been a faculty member at Weill Cornell Medicine - Q (WCM-Q) since 2008. Prior to joining WCM-Q, Dr. Uthman served as faculty member at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, Departments of Neurology, since 1991 and Neuroscience since 1996. Dr. Uthman has taught medical and graduate courses in neurology, epilepsy and electroencephalography (EEG).
Dr. Uthman’s research interests include clinical studies in the treatment of epilepsy, pharmacokinetics of antiepileptic drugs, seizures in the elderly, treatment of acute seizure disorders and status epilepticus and neurostimulation for treatment of epilepsy. His pioneering pilot studies regarding the safety and feasibility of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in humans advanced this novel method of therapy to the frontiers of modern treatment of intractable epilepsy. He has served on a number of committees and boards, ranging from 12-year service on the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, VA Medical Center, Gainesville, Florida to his more recent service on the Research and Development Committee, North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. Dr. Uthman is an opinion leader in the field of epilepsy and served as member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida and Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. He also served as Principal Investigator, member of the Speakers Bureau or Consultant for the U.S.A. Veterans Health System and multiple manufacturers of therapies for the treatment of epilepsy. Dr. Uthman is board certified in Neurology, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology and has served as an examiner for the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology.
Dr. Uthman teaches his specialty of Neurology to Medical students over the four years of preclinical and clinical training they spend at WCM-Q and Hamad Medical Center (HMC). He is the Director of the Neurology Clerkship, preparing students to handle neurological symptoms and conditions safely and effectively regardless of what residency or specialty they choose. Realizing the wealth of pathology and staff at HMC, he foresees a structured residency training program that will prepare interested Medical graduates to specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. As an advocate for patients whose lives have been touched by epilepsy, he foresees the creation of a "Gulf Epilepsy Foundation in Qatar" that will be a resource knowledge and education for those patients and their families in Qatar and the region. In collaboration with colleagues at the Department of Internal Medicine and the Division of Neurology at HMC, he is building a comprehensive epilepsy program that can provide world-class diagnostic and treatment options utilizing cutting-edge video-EEG monitoring tools and therapies, obviating the need for patients seeking medical attention for epilepsy to travel abroad. Following submission of 5-year, three-phase proposal to establish an Epilepsy Unit as a corner pillar of a national Neuroscience Institute, Dr. Uthman, in collaboration with the new Director of the Neuroscience Institute and colleagues from HMC and the Academic Health System in Qatar, has acquired new equipment and is inviting specialist in epilepsy to join him in his efforts. In support of the mission of WCM-Q that calls for providing the highest quality care for the community, Dr. Uthman has hosted the public Medicine and U lecture series from 2009 till 2013, a series of didactic and interactive informational medical presentations that are intended to raise awareness of the public in regards to common medical illnesses that are most pertinent to the society in Qatar.
