Marcellina Mian obtained her medical degree from McGill University, Canada, in 1971. She conducted her pediatric training at the Montreal Children's Hospital and the New England Medical Center (Boston, MA). In 2008, Dr. Mian obtained a Master's in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University (The Netherlands). She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Mian’s career had two areas of focus: medical education and child protection. She began as Director of Medical Education at the North Shore Children's Hospital (Salem, MA) and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Tufts University (Boston). In 1980 she joined The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto (Canada) and reached the rank of Professor of Pediatrics, with a cross appointment in the Department of Public Health. She was also Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for eight years, Medical Director of the Child Protection Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for one year, and a member of the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program for 26 years.
Dr. Mian joined Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) in July 2006 as a Professor of Pediatrics and became Professor Emerita of Pediatrics in July 2016. During her ten-year tenure, she held several academic leadership positions, including Associate Dean for Medical Education, and was very active at the local, national, and international level in organizations that aim at child maltreatment prevention. Dr. Mian was part of a group of professionals at Hamad Medical Corporation that established a hospital-based SCAN team and provided consultation to the World Health Organization on developing guidelines for an integrated multisectoral approach to child maltreatment prevention worldwide, and on related training materials.
She has been a member of the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse (ISPCAN) since 1984 and its president from 2002 to 2004. Dr. Mian was and continues to be active in conducting research on child maltreatment and medical education, particularly in enhancing the performance of international students in an American-based medical education system. She has written a number of articles and been a presenter on these subjects at numerous conferences in different countries.
